Apart from the tournament, the event is likely a Indonesian Badminton Association selection program to pick players for the next 2017 Sea Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, August 19-30 as quoted from the secretary general of PP PBSI Achmad Budiharto (juara.net) after an interview in, Wednesday (7/6/2017).
"We have not listed the players who will participate at 2017 Sea Games. We want to see their performance at Indonesia Open, then we'' decide who's going," he said.
This year's SEA Games is coinciding with BWF World Championship in Glasgow, Scotland, August 21-27. This is being considered seriously by the PBSI so that they can send the best players for both events.
"The failure at Sudirman Cup makes us want to prevent similar results. Building strong physical preparations cannot be done instantly, we need to set priority who's going to the Sea Games," Achmad said.
At the SEA Games 2017, the government does not set any specific target on how many medals should be taken home. However, PBSI wants to keep the SEA Games Singapura 2015 results as benchmark.
"Two years ago, we got three medals from mixed doubles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles. Although not easy, we want to keep the good results stay," said Achmad.
"Thailand will be in full strength. Women's singles player Ratchanok Intanon men's singles Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk are only players who will be sent to the World Championship. Malaysia is not too different, they only send Lee Chong Wei for the World Championship," said Achmad.
At the 2017 SEA Games, PBSI aims gold medals from women's doubles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles.
